SUBJ: INNOVATORS SHAPING THE FUTURE - ASIAN AMERICAN,
NATIVE HAWAIIAN, AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH
1. The Coast Guard joins our Nation in celebrating Asian American,
Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. Each
May, we honor the rich culture and significant contributions of
AANHPI communities. This year's theme is "Advancing Leaders Through
Innovation."
2. AANHPI leaders have introduced many groundbreaking innovations to
advance America's wellbeing. Dr. Steven Chu was awarded the Nobel
Prize for Physics in 1997 for his revolutionary work in cooling and
trapping atoms with laser light. With ten patents to his name and
over 250 scientific and technical papers published, Dr. Chu's
contributions span a wide range of fields, from general relativity
to clean energy. Nainoa Thompson, navigator for the Polynesian
Voyaging Society, revived traditional Polynesian navigation
techniques to inspire innovative solutions for sustainable
environmental conservation. Satya Narayana Nadella, Sundar Pichai,
and Jensen Huang, CEOs of Microsoft, Alphabet, and Nvidia,
respectively, have made America the global technology leader.
Innovators and creators in our Nation's science and technology
sector include Ellison Onizuka, the first Asian American in space,
and Chen-Shiung Wu, a pioneering woman who improved radiation
detection and conducted essential research to enrich uranium.
3. AANHPI members of our Coast Guard workforce have been, and are,
instrumental in shaping the Service's future. From leveraging new
technology to bolster maritime security to developing innovative
strategies for more inclusive work environments, AANHPI leaders
drive progress, advance mission excellence, and promote strong
relationships with the communities we serve.
4. We all must be committed to creating a work environment that
fosters innovation, values diverse perspectives, and promotes
success for all team members is essential. I encourage all units to
plan and participate in special activities that celebrate AANHPI
heritage and the contributions of AANHPI members to our Nation.
