PROCESS FOR ASSIGNMENT YEAR 2025 (AY25)
1.This ALCGPSC solicits applicants interested in being considered for
selection to attend the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
School of Medicine (USUHS SOM) four-year medical student program per references
(a-c). The candidates selected at this panel should anticipate starting the
program in the summer of 2025.
2.Background. The USUHS SOM Program is a four-year allopathic medical school
program that leads to the award of a professional degree in medicine
(Medical Doctor, or M.D.). It is completed in-residence at USUHS.
3.Eligibility. Commissioned officers in the grades of O-1 through O-3,
Chief Warrant Officers, and enlisted personnel in the grades of E-4 through E-7,
on Active Duty, SELRES, or IRR are eligible. Personnel currently serving as
Coast Guard Academy cadets are not eligible to apply to these programs.
Selected applicants are required to hold the grade of O-1 or O-1E while enrolled
at USUHS SOM. Officers currently holding a commission above the grade of O-1 are
eligible for “save pay” as described in section D.5. of Appendix B of ref (a) but
will be required to resign their commissions and accept new appointments in the
grade of Ensign.
4.Expectations and requirements for USUHS SOM:
a.Applicants must be U. S. citizens.
b.Enlisted and officer applicants must meet Coast Guard commissioning requirements.
This includes a commissioning physical exam within 12 months of projected
matriculation to USUHS (including applicants who are already commissioned officers).
Personnel requiring a commissioning physical may obtain one through a Coast Guard
or DoD clinic or Military Treatment Facility.
c.Applicants must be no older than age 36 on June 30th of the year of projected
matriculation to USUHS. The Coast Guard and USUHS may waive this requirement.
d.Applicants must complete an application to USUHS through the online American
Medical College Application Service (AMCAS).
e.Applicants must also complete a supplemental application to USUHS; procedures
to complete the supplemental application will be sent to applicants once they
have applied using AMCAS.
f.Applicants must have taken the MCAT within three years of projected
matriculation; applicants are encouraged to visit the USUHS website for more
information as information regarding competitive scores may change annually.
g.Applicants must submit Letters of Recommendation as prescribed at the USUHS
application website.
h.Graduates of USUHS SOM will be eligible for appointment to the grade of
Lieutenant where they have maintained applicable service standards.
5.The required application packages and other information for USUHS SOM is
available at the following link:
(Copy and Paste URL Below into Browser) https://medschool.usuhs.edu/admissions
6.Selection Panel Application Requirements: Personnel interested must submit an
application, as one PDF package, that includes the following items in the
following order to CAPT Shane Steiner copying via contact below no later
than 20 May 2024. The PDF Portfolio format will not be accepted.
a.Personal Narrative (no longer than 1-page, standard Coast Guard Memo format).
b.Commanding Officer's Endorsement (no longer than 1-page, standard Coast Guard Memo format).
c.MCAT score report.
d.Officer Interview Form (CG-5527) – The interview will be coordinated
through Mr. Wade McConnell at wade.b.mcconnell@uscg.mil. The interview
panel provides candidates an opportunity to clarify aspects of their
application and expand upon their suitability for selection.
e.Baccalaureate degree transcripts (and any additional transcripts as applicable).
Applicants do not need a completed baccalaureate degree if they
are projected to complete a baccalaureate degree prior to matriculation
to USUHS SOM.
7.Waivers to the above eligibility requirements shall be sent to CAPT Steiner
via a command endorsed memo no later than 20 May 2024.
8.Enlisted applicants are encouraged to ensure their annual or semiannual
evaluations are completed and marked final in Direct Access.
9.Officer applicants are encouraged to submit annual or semiannual
OERs in a timely manner. If LT applicants desire their OER to be reviewed
by the PG/Adv Ed panel, annual OERs with an end of period (EOP) of 30 April 2024
must be submitted to OPM-3 no later than 19 May 2024. The 31 January 2024 OER
meets the requirement for semi-annual OERs for the grade of O-2. However,
LTJG applicants may submit an optional Boards and Panels OER. If desired,
the EOP for an optional Boards and Panels OER may be no earlier than 02 May 2024
and must arrive at OPM-3 no later than 19 May 2024. Boards and Panels OERs are
not authorized for Ensigns as there are less than 92 days between the
EOP of 31 March 2024 and the start of the PG/Adv Ed Panels. All applicants
who have not submitted an OER should submit directly to OPM-3 with
"URGENT PANEL APPLICANT" as the subject line.
10.Selection for these opportunities is a two-step process. The first
step is the submission of the application to the Coast Guard panel.
The second step is the application to the actual school's program. As
for the Coast Guard part of the process, applicants' packages will be
reviewed by a Coast Guard executive-level panel in June and selectees
will be forwarded to USUHS NLT 1 August. As for the program-specific part
of the process, applicants must apply directly to the program they are
interested in and complete that school's application process as outlined
in the USUHS SOM website.

service for this program.
12.POC: For questions regarding general program administration and the
application process, contact CAPT Shane Steiner
