SUBJ: UPCOMING LAUNCH OF THE COAST GUARD'S ONLINE WORLD OF
LEARNING (CG-OWL)
1. This ALCOAST announces the upcoming launch of the Coast Guard's
new online world of learning (CG-OWL). CG-OWL will replace our
legacy Learning Management System this spring, offering a more
robust, flexible, and user-friendly system to deliver online
training and education to our total workforce. CG-OWL leverages
the Moodle platform, an open source software system that is widely
used by corporations and educational institutions across the
country. CG-OWL is also being developed incrementally. The first
increment will provide similar mandated training functionalities
as the current LMS and provide capabilities to improve the delivery
of facilitated online training.
2. CG-OWL is developed for and named by our workforce. A crowd
sourced naming event was held in December that received more than
1000 responses, and provided 278 unique names for consideration.
CG-OWL was selected as the top choice from all the names suggested.
3. The first increment of CG-OWL will be deployed later this spring.
Prior to implementation, the Coast Guard will fulfill all required
bargaining obligations.
