SUBJ: 2023 LATINA STYLE DISTINGUISHED MILITARY SERVICE AWARD
RECIPIENTS
1. Marine Science Technician Second Class (MST2) Rosa Gomes Gavidia,
Sector Juneau, Intelligence Specialist First Class (IS1) Monserrat
Lazaro Rivera, District 14 (D14), and Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG)
Melanie Arroyave, Sector Virginia, are the Coast Guard’s 2023 LATINA
Style Distinguished Military Service Award recipients. This
recognition honors women in the military, civilian workforce, and
Service Academies who have influenced and enhanced the role of
Latinas in their organizations, Department, and Academy.
2. MST2 Gomes Gavidia superbly represented the Service through
active community engagement and positively impacted the lives of
thousands of children by directing Coast Guard volunteers and
activities at local schools as the unit Partnership in Education
Coordinator. She also led lunchtime learning, presentations, film
screenings, and panel discussion activities throughout Sector Juneau
during National Hispanic Heritage Month to promote cultural
awareness and understanding.
3. IS1 Lazaro Rivero directly contributed to strengthening
international operations and partnerships across the Pacific Ocean
by leveraging her intelligence expertise and cultural awareness.
Supporting a diverse and inclusive Coast Guard, she promoted active
participation in the D14 Leadership and Diversity Advisor Council as
the group’s Secretary and collaborated with recruiting offices to
hold outreach activities that raised awareness about the Coast Guard
and career opportunities with diverse communities.
4. LTJG Arroyave displayed an unmatched passion for the recruitment
and retention of women in the Coast Guard. An active member of the
Norfolk State University’s College Student Pre-Commissioning
Initiative (CSPI) Executive Championship program, she implemented
mentorship programs, ASVAB tutoring, workout plans, and mock officer
panel interviews for prospective CSPI candidates, and developed 90
leads and 2 successful candidates. Her zeal to make an impact earned
her selection to the Coast Guard’s Advisory Board on Women, where
she provides recommendations to the Commandant on recruitment,
retention, advancement, and the well-being of women who serve in the
Coast Guard.
5. The Coast Guard is proud of these members for their outstanding
leadership, achievements, and commitment to fostering a diverse and
inclusive Coast Guard. The LATINA Style organization recognized
these exceptional individuals during the 20th Annual National LATINA
Symposium Distinguished Military Service Award Program in Arlington,
VA on September 21, 2023.
6. Civil Rights awards help maximize the Coast Guard's overall
mission effectiveness through recognition of members'
accomplishments and contributions to Civil Rights and Equal
Opportunity programs, including the Partnership in Education (PIE)
