SUBJ: SEARCH AND RESCUE MISSION COORDINATOR (SMC) DUTIES
AND COMPETENCY
A. U.S. Coast Guard Addendum to the United States National
Search and Rescue Supplement (NSS) to the International
Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual (IAMSAR),
COMDTINST 16130.2G
1. This ALCOAST announces policy to clarify the role of the SMC
and establish training and certification standards.
2. Effective immediately, REF (A) is amended as follows:
a. Section 1.2 from the introduction through the end of section
1.2.2 is removed and replaced with updated policy contained in the
URL in paragraph 3 of this ALCOAST.
b. Section 1.3 from the introduction through the end of section
1.3.3 is removed and replaced with updated policy contained in the
URL in paragraph 3 of this ALCOAST.
c. Appendix Q is added.
3. The updated policy and Appendix Q are located on
COMDT (CG-SAR)'s policy website at:

4. Military personnel who hold a current designation as SMC may
retain that designation until transfer from their current unit. To
recertify, all requirements of REF (A) must be complete. Civilian
personnel who hold a current designation as SMC are not required to
recertify, but must complete Appendix Q within three years of the
release of this message.
5. These changes will be incorporated into the next revision of
REF (A), which will be released within the next year.
6. This message will be cancelled on 10 AUG 2024.
