1. This ALCOAST provides new criteria for award of the Afghanistan
Campaign Medal (ACM) and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary
Medal (GWOT-EM) in accordance with REF (A).
2. The authorization to award the Afghanistan Campaign Medal (ACM)
to members of the U.S. Armed Forces has been terminated effective
31 August 2021, which coincides with the withdrawal of the last U.S.
military forces from Afghanistan, the closure of Operation FREEDOM'S
SENTINEL (OFS), and the President's announcement on 31 August 2021
that the war in Afghanistan was over.
3. The authorization to award the Global War on Terrorism
Expeditionary Medal (GWOT-EM) is hereby authorized for Operation
ENDURING SENTINEL (OES) effective 1 September 2021. The associated
OES GWOT-EM area of eligibility is the same as it was for OFS.
4. This change will be included in the next revision of REF (B),
which will be released within the next year.
