SUBJ: 103RD ANNIVERSARY OF VETERANS DAY
1. November 11, 1918 marked the end of hostilities in World War I.
A year later, the first "Armistice Day" parade was held in
New York City to recognize veterans of that conflict. In 1954,
President Dwight D. Eisenhower re-established the holiday as
"Veterans Day" to honor all Americans who served in uniform,
advancing peace in concert with partners and allies. He said
Veterans Day is an occasion to "remember the sacrifices of all
those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on
foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom."
2. Every member of our Coast Guard workforce protects our
Nation's security and prosperity in times of war and peace. The
missions we perform along the U.S. coastlines, on the Great Lakes,
on the inland rivers, and around the world enable a safe, secure,
and stable maritime system on which our Nation depends.
3. I am grateful for your service, whether on active duty, in the
Reserve, or as a civilian, Auxiliarist, or retiree. On this Veterans
Day, I salute and thank you, as well as your families that stand
with you, for your honorable service and sacrifice.
4. ADM Linda L. Fagan, Commandant (CCG), sends.
