SUBJ: NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL AWARD TERMINATION DATE
A. DOD Memo for Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff DTD Memo
30 August 2022
B. Coast Guard Military Medals and Awards Manual, COMDTINST
M1650.25E
1. The authorization to award the National Defense Service
Medal (NDSM) to members of the U.S. Armed Forces serving on
active duty on or after 11 September 2001 has been amended by
REF (A) to authorize only members who served from 11 September 2001
to 31 December 2022. The inclusion of the 31 December 2022 end date
is based on the United States' no longer conducting large-scale
combat operations in designated geographic locations as a result
of the terrorist attacks on the United States that occurred on
11 September 2001.
2. This ALCOAST also modifies Chapter 5 Section 4(a)(1) of REF (B)
to reflect this change by replacing the current language with the
following: "Honorable active service as a member of the Armed Forces
for any period (inclusive) from 27 June 1950 to 28 July 1954; from
1 January 1961 to 14 August 1974; from 2 August 1990 to
30 November 1995; or from 12 September 2001 to 31 December 2022.
Only one award of the National Defense Service Medal may be
authorized for each period of eligibility."
3. This change will be included in the next revision of REF (B),
which will be released within the next year.
4. This message is cancelled on 30 OCT 2023.
5. Questions regarding the NDSM should be directed to
CG PSC-PSD-mua at: ARL.Medals@uscg.mil.
6. RADM B. K. Penoyer, Assistant Commandant for Human Resources
(CG-1), sends.
7. Internet release is authorized.
