SUBJ: SOLICITATION FOR MILITARY MENTORS FOR THE 2023 UNITED STATES
SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM
A. Military Assignments and Authorized Absences, COMDTINST M1000.8A
1. At the request of the Senate, the Coast Guard supports the 2023
United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) by providing escort
officers to serve as role models for an impressionable group of
high-achieving, influential young Americans and present a unique
opportunity for these students to gain a better understanding of
Department of Defense (DoD) and Coast Guard missions, people,
and lifestyles. Each military mentor will be assigned a group of
student delegates for the duration of the program. Additionally,
military mentors will facilitate inclusive and insightful debate and
discussion among the students and assist USSYP staff with
implementation of the program agenda. Therefore, professional
bearing must be maintained at all times.
2. Applicants: Active duty and reserve officers, O-2 through O-5,
are eligible to apply. O-5 candidates must be prior USSYP military
mentors, no exceptions. DoD is seeking a diverse cross-section of
military occupations. Military mentors must be available for all
pre-program training and full participation from 02–11 March 2023
and have their command's endorsement.
3. Previous Mentors: Prior USSYP military mentors, O-3 through O-5,
are encouraged to apply but are not guaranteed selection.
4. Two officers, typically prior USSYP mentors, will be selected to
serve as the Senior Military Mentor (SMM) and Assistant Senior
Military Mentor (ASMM). The SMM and ASMM will report to the USSYP
director on 28 February 2023 for advance preparation. The rest of
the military mentor team will report on 02 March 2023. All mentors
should plan to conclude no earlier than 11 March 2023.
5. All officers must possess permissive TDY/TAD orders or be in a
"leave" status during the period assigned at no cost to the
government.
6. If you are interested in this program, email Deborah Claiborne
at Deborah.H.Claiborne@uscg.mil. You will then be provided detailed
information on how to put your nomination package together.
The deadline to submit your application is 14 November 2023.
After the officers are selected and forwarded to DoD, the Office of
the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs will
facilitate final assessments and announce military mentor selections
by 06 January 2023.
