Media Advisory: Newburyport, Massachusetts to be recertified as Coast Guard City
BOSTON — The city of Newburyport, Massachusetts, is scheduled be recertified as a Coast Guard City during a presentation ceremony, Saturday, at the Newburyport Custom House Maritime Museum.
WHO: Capt. Kailie Benson, commander, Coast Guard Sector Boston, Master Chief Petty Officer Carlos Hessler, officer-in-charge, Coast Guard Station Merrimack River, Sean Reardo, Mayor of Newburyport.
WHAT: Coast Guard City Recertification and presentation of the 2022 Rear Adm. Richard Rybacki Award
WHEN: Saturday August 6, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.

Newburyport was initially designated as a Coast Guard City in 2011 as the nation’s fourteenth Coast Guard City.
Newburyport has a long history with the Coast Guard, dating back to the service’s inception and construction of the first active Revenue Cutter, U.S. Revenue Cutter Massachusetts, in 1791, and was designated as “The Birthplace of the Coast Guard” by a presidential proclamation in 1965.
Newburyport is home to Coast Guard Station Merrimack River, one of only nineteen designated surf stations nationwide.
