HOUSTON — The Coast Guard, the Houston Police Department and the Houston Fire Department are scheduled to conduct a maritime law enforcement demonstration and offer boat rides during an event in Houston, Texas, Tuesday.

The Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston Captain of the Port and members from the Houston Police Department and Houston Fire Department will be available for interviews to discuss the Coast Guard’s ongoing partnership with the city of Houston and the Coast Guard’s 232nd birthday.

Station Houston personnel and the Houston Police Department will also offer boat rides for media members following the demonstration.

The event is scheduled to be held prior to the city of Houston’s recognition of the Coast Guard’s 232nd birthday during their city council session.

On Aug. 4, 1790, President George Washington signed the Tariff Act that authorized the construction of ten vessels, referred to as "cutters," to enforce federal tariff and trade laws and to prevent smuggling establishing the Revenue Cutter Service.

In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service and was officially renamed the Coast Guard, making it the only maritime service dedicated to saving life at sea and enforcing the nation's maritime laws.
