SUBJ: SUPPORT EQUIPMENT SAFETY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
A. U.S. Coast Guard Support Equipment - Weight and Material
Handling Program Policy, COMDTINST 11260.1 (series)
1. This ALCOAST announces March as Support Equipment (SE) Safety
Awareness Month, which kicks off on 01 March 2022. The first SE
Safety Awareness campaign will specifically target units and
personnel operating weight handling and material handling equipment
(WHE/MHE).
2. WHE/MHE mishaps continue to occur. The Support Equipment Program
supported by the Support Equipment Product Line (SEPL) was
established to mitigate these risks in accordance with REF (A). As
a part of this effort, the Program is committed to creating a
culture of safety focused on preventing the next accident.
TRAINING, SUPERVISION, and MAINTENANCE were three leading mishap
root causes identified during recent investigations into Coast
Guard incidents, all of which are tied to human performance.
3. Personnel safety is critical to mission success. The SE Safety
Awareness Campaign is designed to assist unit commanders,
supervisors, operators, and crews operating WHE/MHE by providing
Coast Guard and industry safety standards and best practices.
4. Beginning 01 March 2022 units will be able to access the SE
Safety Awareness Campaign toolkit on the SEPL portal page:
(Copy and Paste URL Below into Browser)

https://cg.portal.uscg.mil/units/alc/SEPL/Pages/Home.aspx

Units are expected to conduct the 1/2-day safety campaign activities
during the month of March. The toolkit will include instructions for
completing the campaign activities, a SE Safety Awareness video
presentation, several WHE/MHE video scenarios of common accidents/
incidents to choose from, and discussion points to facilitate
discussion and review.
5. Units should work with their operational commanders to pause and
coordinate a specific time to conduct the Safety Awareness Campaign
activities to minimize the impact on operations and training.
6. I have the utmost trust and confidence in our extremely capable
WHE/MHE operators and applaud you for expertly managing the risks
inherent in supporting our vital Coast Guard missions.
