Elizabeth River - I-64 High Rise Bridge Construction - Waterway Closure 

 

The Coast Guard has granted approval to Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to set the remaining girders in the center span of the new, fixed I-64 High Rise Bridge.  Heavy life equipment will occupy the navigational channel thus requiring complete closure of the navigational span during the below timeframes.

 

Closure dates/times are provided below:

 

To accommodate heavy construction equipment setting girders within the center span of the new fixed I-64 High Rise Bridge, the horizontal span of the New Fixed I-64 High Rise Bridge will be closed-to-navigation during (8) 16 - hour closures from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the following dates in January.

  • Thursday, January 13th.
  • Friday, January 14th.
  • Saturday, January 15th (contingency day)
  • Monday, January 17th.
  • Tuesday, January 18th.
  • Wednesday, January 19th (contingency day)
  • Thursday, January 27th.
  • Friday, January 28th.
  • Saturday, January 29th (contingency day)
  • Tuesday, February 1st.
  • Wednesday, February 2nd.
  • Thursday, February 3rd (contingency day)

The navigation span to I-64 High Rise Bridge, mile 7.1, in Chesapeake, VA will remain closed to navigation and will NOT be available for openings during the closure periods noted above. The navigation span beneath the new fixed I-64 High Rise Bridge will NOT be available for transit during closure periods.  Mariners should carefully consider transit plans outside of proposed closures and ALL contingency dates and use caution when transiting the area.  At all other times, the waterway will be open to navigation.
