LA 23-BELLE CHASSE BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT, ALGIERS CANAL

Commencing on August 2, 2021 and continuing through approximately April 30, 2022, Louisiana Department of Transportation, in a joint venture with Traylor- Massman, will begin construction activities to replace the State Road 23 Belle Chasse Highway drawbridge. The bridge is located across the Algiers Canal Mile 3.7 along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, New Orleans, LA. The construction will take place between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

During this period, the drawbridge will continue to open according to regulations in 33 CFR 117.451(b). Mariners can anticipate seeing waterborne equipment, barges and vessels adjacent to, and possibly extending no more than 5’ into the main channel. The M/V DUTCHMAN will remain on-scene during work activities to communicate with passing vessels and ensure safe passage through the bridge and construction sites. This includes moving barges or equipment, if needed, to allow vessels to safely transit the construction area. Vessels or barges carrying oil or bulk dangerous cargoes regulated under 46 CFR subchapters D and O should contact the M/V DUTCHMAN to secure any site hot work before passing through the construction site. M/V DUTCHMAN will monitor VHF-FM Channel 16. Mariners are requested to pass the construction site at slowest safe speed.

The Algiers Canal will be closed to all vessel traffic from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on August 4, 2021.

Updates and/or changes to the published schedule and canal closures will be disseminated via VTS email distribution and/or Broadcast Notice to Mariners.
