BROWNSVILLE, Texas — The Coast Guard and partner agencies are scheduled to conduct an Area Maritime Security Training and Exercise Program (AMSTEP) tabletop exercise Wednesday in the Port of Brownsville.
During the exercise, federal, state and local officials around Brownsville and Cameron County will unite to test the South Texas Area Maritime Security Plan and respond to a notional transportation security incident in the Brownsville Ship Channel.
The AMSTEP program was born out of the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The program focuses on building linkages between government and private sector entities to secure the nation's port facilities.
