SUBJ: 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF COAST GUARD TRAINING CENTER PETALUMA
1. Happy 50th Anniversary to Coast Guard Training Center
Petaluma! Since 01 July 1971, the Coast Guard’s premier
west coast training facility has been the center for
excellence in workforce development, delivering over 41
apprentice and advanced courses to ensure a ready, relevant,
and responsive workforce.
2. Staffed by more than 650 active duty, civilian, and contract
employees, the location was originally established in 1942 as
an Army Communications Station where secret codes were deciphered
during World War II. On July 1st, 1971 the Coast Guard took
ownership of the property and quickly established it as the
standard for excellence in training, leadership, and
professionalism.
3. Training Center Petaluma is the homeport for seven Coast
Guard ratings, CS, ET, IT, HS, OS, SK, and YN. These ratings
account for more than 25-percent of the Coast Guard enlisted
workforce. The dedicated staff graduates nearly 1,300 apprentice
school students annually, and hosts Coastguardsmen and women
from operational units to attend 34 different advanced training
courses. The Training Center also remains the home of the
renowned Chief Petty Officer Academy, graduating more than
900 senior enlisted leaders every year.
4. With 837 acres comprising over 810,000 square feet of
facilities, the Training Center has a full civil engineering
unit, a police and fire department, a 127-unit housing community,
a child development center, a movie theatre and bowling alley,
and even a high-tech water reclamation plant. At any given moment
Petaluma may be training the Coast Guard’s next leaders while
helping the local community fight wildfires, renovating Coast
Guard housing to provide high-quality living for our members,
and administering medical services to its members and eight
other District Eleven or Pacific Area Coast Guard units.
5. On this day we not only celebrate the Training Center’s
history, but look forward to its future. Petaluma has become
a Coast Guard leader in innovation as it adapts courses to
blended online-classroom learning to meet Coast Guard workforce
needs more efficiently. Additionally, Petaluma is a leader in
innovative technologies in renewable energy and sustainability,
leading the way to achieve energy independence and resiliency
through solar power and energy storage.
6. Guided by the principles of Stewardship, Community, and
Sustainable Performance, Training Center Petaluma has a long
history of ingenuity, dedication, and perseverance. Through
a persistent innovative spirit and a culture of continuous
improvement, Training Center Petaluma is a leader in structuring
the Coast Guard’s Modernized Ready Learning ecosystem, ensuring
the readiness of the current and future Mission Ready Total
Workforce.
7. On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Training Center
Petaluma, join me in commending the hard work and dedication
of the hundreds of men and women responsible for delivering
the finest training to the world’s greatest Coast Guard.
Through their commitment to excellence, Training Center
Petaluma remains the best place to live, work, and train!
