SUBJ: POLICY UPDATE ADDING SUNSCREEN AND INSECT REPELLANT AS
AUTHORIZED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
A. Safety and Environmental Health Manual, COMDTINST M5100.47C

1. This ACN announces a policy update to REF (A) providing clear
guidance that sunscreen and insect repellant are authorized PPE.
2. The following updated policy is effective immediately:
    a. REF (A) paragraph 7.B.4.b is amended to state “PPE includes,
but is not limited to: metatarsal foot protection; rubber boots with
steel toes; non-prescription eye protection; prescription eyewear
inserts/lenses for full-face respirators; goggles and face shields;
firefighting PPE; hard hats; hearing protection; sunscreen; insect
repellant; and welding PPE.”
3. This change will be made to the next update to REF (A), which
will be released within the next year.
4. Coast Guard units are hereby authorized to use appropriated
Operations and Support (O&S) normal unit operating funds (AFC-57,
AFC-34, AFC-30, AFC-4X, etc.) to procure PPE items to meet
requirements outlined in REF (A). The use of such materials
purchased with appropriated funds should be limited to use
while conducting official Coast Guard business or while in transit
to/from conducting official Coast Guard business. This authorization
applies to active duty, members, reserves on active duty and
civilian government employees, but does not apply to dependents.
