SUBJ: ANCIENT ALBATROSS AWARD (OFFICER AND ENLISTED)
1. The Ancient Albatross Award was originally established in 1966
to honor the Coast Guard Aviator who held that designation for the
longest period of time. In 1988, the award was augmented to include
the Enlisted Ancient Albatross Award, which was established for the
enlisted member with the earliest graduation date from a class "A"
school with a Coast Guard aviation rating. The award recipient is
the embodiment of the dedication and professionalism associated
with long service to Coast Guard Aviation.
2. I am pleased to announce that ADM Charles Ray will transfer the
honor and mantle of the Ancient Albatross to RADM Melvin Bouboulis
during a ceremony at the Aviation Logistics Center in Elizabeth
City, NC on 22 April 2021. Since its inception in 1966, there have
been 25 aviators accorded this recognition.
3. Additionally, I am pleased to announce that AMTCM Broderick
Johnson will transfer the honor and mantle of the Enlisted Ancient
Albatross to AETCM Jaime Young during the same ceremony. Since its
inception in 1988, there have been 12 enlisted aviation members
accorded this recognition.
4. As ADM Ray and AMTCM Johnson prepare to transition into
retirement from active service, I send my most sincere appreciation
for their long and continued dedicated service to Coast Guard
Aviation and to our Nation.
5. I congratulate RADM Bouboulis and AETCM Young on their
designations. In their capacity, I am certain they will ably
represent the rich traditions of Coast Guard Aviation and the
hundreds of Coast Guard men and women who fly and provide daily
support to Coast Guard mission accomplishment.
6. POC: AETCM Bryan Salazar, COMDT (CG-711) at (202) 372-2221 or
Bryan.P.Salazar@uscg.mil.
