SUBJ: SOLICITATION FOR THE 2021 AMERICAN LEGION SPIRIT OF SERVICE AWARD
1. The American Legion Spirit of Service Award is presented annually to an enlisted member E-5 and below from each branch of the Armed Forces. Award presentations will occur during the National Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, August 27 – September 1, 2021.
2. Commands are encouraged to nominate military members who meet the below criteria:
a. Serving in paygrade E-5 or below during the period 1 January – 31 December 2020.
b. Performs high level of volunteer community service off-duty in a local community.
c. Is an outstanding military professional.
d. It is highly recommended the individual is available to attend the National Convention to accept the award.
3. Commands should submit nominations in memo format. The memo must include nominee's full name, rating, current duty station, unit address, work phone number, home of record, work email, and a narrative describing the member's level of involvement in off-duty volunteer community service. The narrative should include the number of volunteer hours, name of the organization where service is
performed, as well as the type of activity (i.e. provided 38 hours at XYZ, as a soccer coach; spent 10 hours at Library reading to children).
4. A separate biography sheet must accompany the nomination memo, which will be read at the award ceremony. The biography sheet must include the volunteer service narrative listed above and detail how the community benefitted from that service.
5. Commands should be prepared to provide one 8” x 10” glossy .jpg photograph or high-resolution digital head and shoulder photograph of their nominee if they are chosen as the award recipient. The photograph should be an official photo in Service Dress Blue.
6. The American Legion will cover travel and lodging for the individual award recipient within the Continental United States. Units will be required to fund travel costs outside the Continental United States, if applicable. The award recipient is responsible for the travel costs of personal guests.
7. The award recipient will arrive at the convention hotel on August 27 and depart on September 2, 2021. Administrative leave should be granted for the period of 6 days and 5 nights. Additional information will be provided upon completion of the selection process.
