SUBJ:  COVID-19: USCG COVID-19 SAFE WORKPLACE GUIDANCE - UPDATE 1
A. CDC Order, Section 361 of the Public Health Service Act
(42 U.S.C. 264): Requirement for Persons to Wear Masks While on
Conveyances and at Transportation Hubs
B. COMDT COGARD WASHINGTON DC 022150Z FEB 21/ALCOAST 040/21
1. In accordance with REF (A), all Coast Guard personnel are
required to wear face masks when traveling on public conveyances.
The requirement for passengers to wear face masks applies to the
full duration of travel, including while at transportation hubs
such as airports and bus stations, and while boarding and
disembarking public conveyances. Examples of public conveyances
include airplanes, ships, ferries, trains, subways, taxis, and
ride-shares. Coast Guard conveyances such as cutters or aircraft
are not included in the definition of public conveyances for the
purpose of this ALCOAST.
2. Requiring a properly worn mask which completely covers the nose
and mouth is a reasonable and necessary measure to prevent the
introduction, transmission and spread of COVID-19 into the United
States and among the states and territories.
3. Members should be cognizant of their environments at all times.
Physical distance as well as the duration of interaction with other
people are very important to limit exposure opportunities. When
faced with environments that challenge your ability to control
physical distance and the duration of personal interaction, a
well-fitted face mask can reduce exposure opportunities and should
be employed. Wearing a cloth mask composed of multiple layers, or
a cloth mask on top of a disposable mask, as well as knotting the
ear loops of a medical procedure mask and tucking in and flattening
the extra material close to the face are methods that have shown
to improve mask performance and reduce exposure to COVID-19.
4. The CDC frequently updates COVID-19 safety guidelines and provides
recommendations for face mask use here:

-of-masks.html.
