1. This ACN updates AED policy while REF (A) is being revised. As
outlined in REFs (B) through (J), specific Coast Guard entities such
as fire houses, PSUs, cutters with assigned Independent Duty Health
Services Technicians, Air Stations, and diving units are authorized
to carry and use AEDs.
    a. Non-aviation CG units using AEDs as outlined in REFs (B), (D)
through (G) are authorized to use any AED approved by the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA).
b . Per REF (C) CG Air Stations are permitted to carry and use
AEDs as long as they use internal batteries as the sole power
supply and are non-transmitting. The Pilot-in-Command is authorized
to make the determination.
2. All units not included within paragraph one that want to
implement AED programs, including use in operational situations
(e.g. boat operations, Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, etc.), can
do so, but only after coordinating with Health, Safety and
Work-Life Service Center Operational Medicine Division, to ensure
their AED programs comply as applicable with REFs (I) and (J).
3. Units that are not covered by REFs (B) through (J) or do not
have an approved AED program must either establish one as indicated
in paragraph two or cease the use and carriage of AEDs. Any
policies not addressed specifically in this ACN remain unchanged.
4. REF (A) will be updated to reflect these changes and will be
released within the next year.
5. This message will be cancelled on 11 FEB 2022.
