SUBJ:  73RD BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE
1. On behalf of the Coast Guard, Happy 73rd Birthday to the U.S. Air Force.
2. September 18, 2020 is a celebration of your heritage, but your legacy started before
September 1947 with the bold vision of two bicycle mechanics in a Dayton, Ohio garage.
The innovation of the “flying machine” changed the art and science of war for US Military
leaders, and laid the foundation for an independent Air Force. Like the Wright brothers,
the modern day Air Force’s commitment to innovation is vital to national security and
defense.
3. General Henry “Hap” Arnold, former Wright brothers flying school trainee and founder
of Project Rand, is arguably the first champion of Air Force innovation. Today, Airmen
at all levels continue to carry on General Arnold’s legacy of innovative thinking, helping
research and development of cutting-edge technology credited with ensuring the US Armed Forces
retain competitive advantage and dominance in the air, space, and cyberspace domains.
4. The Coast Guard also thanks the Air Force for the advancement of satellite technology
which has made Coast Guard and Air Force search and rescue coordination more timely and
precise over the decades.
5. Fly, Fight, Win! Again, Happy Birthday and Semper Paratus.
6. ADM Karl L. Schultz, Commandant, United States Coast Guard, sends.
7. Internet release is authorized.
