Coast Guard to honor Fire Island Ferries crew for July rescue
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Coast Guard is scheduled to present a Public Service Award to the crew of the Fireball, a Fire Island Ferries ferry, on Tuesday, August 25.
The Fireball crew will be recognized for their heroic efforts in rescuing six people from a vessel in distress near Fire Island, New York, on July 26.
On July 26, the captain and crew of Fireball noticed a vessel in distress, sitting low in the water along their route in the Great South Bay. As the Fireball approached, the vessel suddenly capsized, tossing all six persons aboard into the water. The crew of the Fireball maneuvered the vessel in high winds and dense vessel traffic, while rigging rescue equipment. Their heroic actions resulted in the swift rescue of all six persons in the water and their safe transfer to a Coast Guard small boat.
