Vice Adm. Steven Poulin to relieve Vice Adm. Scott Buschman as Atlantic Area Commander
PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Members of the media and the public are invited to watch the Coast Guard Atlantic Area change-of-command ceremony virtually, Wednesday June 10, 2020 at 10 a.m.
Vice Adm. Steven D. Poulin is scheduled to relieve Vice Adm. Scott A. Buschman as commander of Coast Guard Atlantic Area, Commander, Coast Guard Defense Force East, and Director, DHS Task Force – East. Buschman’s next assignment is the Coast Guard Deputy Commandant for Operations in Washington, D.C.
The Commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Karl Schultz, will preside over the ceremony.
The change of command ceremony marks a transfer of total responsibility and authority from one individual to another. It is a time-honored tradition, conducted before the assembled crew, as well as honored guests and dignitaries to formally demonstrate the continuity of the authority within a command.
“I am proud of the dedication and hard work the crews of Atlantic Area have carried out over the course of my tenure as Area Commander. From the Rocky Mountains to the Arabian Gulf they have saved thousands of lives, interdicted billions of dollars in illegal narcotics, responded to major disasters, facilitated the movement of billions of dollars of commerce on our nation’s waterways, engaged in the Arctic, and ensured the safety of the American people. Thank you for all you do every day. I look forward to watching your continued success,” said Vice Adm. Buschman.
Vice Adm. Buschman is scheduled to relieve Vice Adm. Daniel B. Abel, as the Coast Guard Deputy Commandant for Operations in Washington, D.C.
Prior to assuming command of Atlantic Area, Vice Adm. Buschman served as the Deputy Commander of Coast Guard Atlantic Area, and Commander, Coast Guard Seventh District in Miami, where he was responsible for all Coast Guard operations in the Southeast United States and Caribbean Basin, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Vice Adm. Poulin will report after departing his position as Director of Operations for U.S. Southern Command, where he was responsible for directing U.S. military operations across the Caribbean Basin as well as Central and South America.
The change of command ceremony will be held at Coast Guard Base Portsmouth. The public and media can watch the ceremony live on Facebook by visiting U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area Command.
