A. OFFICER POSTGRADUATE AND ADVANCED EDUCATION APPLICATION PROCESS FOR ASSIGNMENT YEAR
2021 (AY21), ALCGPSC 061/20
1. The Coast Guard Academy is soliciting applications for the Academy Instructor Program.
This program offers outstanding professional development and career broadening
opportunities for officers interested in serving in the challenging and rewarding role
of Academy Instructor. Selectees will have the opportunity to become members of the
faculty charged with educating and developing a sizeable portion of our Service’s future
officer corps. The Academy welcomes applicants who are eager to teach and mentor students
with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
2. In addition to all other required materials and test scores, please include a short
narrative in your e-resume member comments about a challenge or experience you have faced
in your personal or professional life that has helped you to develop cultural competence,
and how this experience will contribute to your ability to effectively teach students
with a wide variety of backgrounds.
3. For further information, interested officers are encouraged to contact the applicable
POC. After completing the degree, the follow-on tour is a four year tour at the CG
Academy as an Instructor.
4. We anticipate selecting members for the following opportunities:
a. Instructor, Department of Humanities (2 TABs):
(1) Master’s in History or Political Science (1 TAB): The officer chosen for this
position will be expected to acquire a Master’s in History, Political Science, or a
related field, with an emphasis on Cultural Studies that satisfies the needs of the
Department of Humanities. Target rank is O3–O4. GRE scores are not required for program
application, but must be taken prior to graduate school application. Undergraduate
transcripts and GPAs will be used to evaluate candidate suitability for advanced
education. All operational specialties are encouraged to apply. The educational
requirement for this position is a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Government,
History, or a related field from an accredited university. The Department of Humanities
welcomes the diversity associated with having rotating military faculty graduate from a
wide variety of graduate programs. Plan of study must be approved by the Government
Section Chief and Humanities Department Head. The Master’s degree must be completed in
2 academic years. A 4-year CGA Instructor tour teaching American social history and
global studies will immediately follow degree completion. Officers should determine

in Philosophy or Political Science (1 TAB): The officer chosen for this position will
be expected to acquire a Master’s in Political Science, Philosophy, or a related field
with an emphasis on Ethics that satisfies the needs of the Department of Humanities.
Target rank is O3–O4. GRE scores are not required for program application, but must be
taken prior to graduate school application. Undergraduate transcripts and GPAs will be
used to evaluate candidate suitability for advanced education. All operational specialties
are encouraged to apply. The educational requirement for this position is a Bachelor's
degree in Philosophy, Political Science, Government, or a related field from an accredited

b. Instructor, Department of Management (1 TAB): The officer chosen for this position
will be expected to acquire a MBA with a concentration in marketing that satisfies the
needs of the Department of Management. Target rank is O3 – O4. GRE or GMAT scores are
required for school application. Applicants are encouraged to submit even preliminary
or practice test scores in applying to this solicitation, if available. There is no
specific minimum target/score but scores will be considered in the context of the overall
application package. Undergraduate transcripts and GPAs will be included in criteria to
evaluate candidate suitability for advanced education. All operational specialties may
apply. Junior officers with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field (data analytics,
management, engineering, computer sciences, math, or physical sciences) are encouraged
to apply. Instructors must be able to teach in multiple management disciplines. Programs
for the Master’s program must be AACSB-accredited. The proposed plan of study must be
approved by the program manager and Management Department Head. The Master’s degree must
be completed in 2 academic years. A 4-year CGA Instructor tour will immediately follow

c. Instructor, Department of Mathematics (1 TAB): The officer chosen for this position
will be expected to acquire a Master of Science in operations research, statistics, or
a related field that satisfies the needs of the Department of Mathematics. Program of
study should include experience with a programming language. Target rank is O2-O4. GRE
scores are required. There is no minimum/target GRE score but scores will be considered
in the context of the overall application package including undergraduate transcript and
GPA. All operational specialties are encouraged to apply. A technical academic background
is strongly preferred. Academic or professional experience in mathematics, statistics,
operations research or computer programming is preferred but not required. The Department
of Mathematics welcomes the diversity associated with having rotating military faculty
graduate from a wide variety of graduate programs in the areas of mathematics, statistics,
operations research or computer programming. Before the selectee chooses a program and
plan of study, it must be approved by the Mathematics Department Head. The Master’s degree
must be completed in 2 academic years. A 4-year CGA Instructor tour will immediately
follow degree completion. Officers should determine the career impact of six consecutive

d. Instructor, Department of Science, Chemistry Section (1 TAB): The officer chosen
for this position will be expected to acquire a Master of Science, or equivalent degree,
in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related field that satisfies the needs
of the Department of Science. Target rank is O3 to O4. All operational specialties may
apply, but officers with Response or Prevention ashore backgrounds are highly encouraged
to apply. GRE scores are not required for program application. Undergraduate transcripts
and GPAs will be included in criteria to evaluate candidate suitability for advanced
education. The educational requirement for this position is a Bachelor’s degree in
Chemistry from an ACS approved program, a B.S. degree in Marine and Environmental Science
with the Chem-Environmental track from USCGA, or an equivalent science or engineering
program (including Chemical Engineering) that includes at least 5 chemistry or chemical
engineering courses. The Department of Science welcomes the diversity associated with
having rotating military faculty graduate from a wide variety of graduate programs in
the area of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or other chemistry focused science. The
ultimate plan of study must be approved by the Chemistry Section Chief. The Master’s
degree must be completed in 2 academic years. A 4-year CGA Instructor tour will
immediately follow degree completion. Officers should determine the career impact of 6

5. We anticipate selecting a total of five officers to begin studies in the fall of 2021.
College choices are arranged in consultation with Department Heads, Section Chiefs (if
