1. This message kicks-off the AY21 Special Assignments (SA) process.
2. All members are highly encouraged to pursue at least one Special Assignment
during their career. These career broadening assignments provide members
valuable opportunities to represent their ratings, network, and learn about
other operational and mission support activities, making them ideal candidates
for future assignments to highly visibile leadership and management positions
(e.g. Silver Badge, OIC, School Chief).
3. SA offers a variety of programs available to all ratings, ranking from
PO3 to POCM. Information on all programs can be found at Ref (C).
4. Eligibility:
a. Meets requirements listed in Ref (A), Article 1.E.2 and elsewhere in the
chapter for specific programs.
b. Additional requirements listed in the Program's corresponding ALCGENL
and/or Information Sheet located at Ref (C).
5. Solicitation Process:
a. Each SA will have a separate ALCGENL announcement highlighting eligibility
requirements, application procedures, and timelines. These messages will be
published periodically on behalf of Programs between now and 31 Jul 2020.
6. Application Procedures:
a. All SA positions require the member to submit the Standard Application
located at Ref (C). Members should pay close attention to the requirements
in the Standard Application as well as Program Information Sheets and the
ALCGENL.
b. Certain SA positions also require the member to submit a 'My Panel Submission'
in Direct Access. Per the Program's ALCGENL, members are directed
to only submit their name in this process. Command Endorsement and Memoranda
shall be submitted as part of the Standard Application process.
c. Incomplete and/or improperly formatted applications will be returned. Deadline
extensions will not be granted to correct errors.
d. Release from Rating: The Special Assignments AO will coordinate the release from
rating process after the panels convening date. Applicants should not contact their
AO requesting to be released. However, all members are encouraged to conduct career
counseling with their rating AO, to include ideal timing when to pursue a SA.
7. Electronic Information - Personnel Data Record (EI-PDR):
a. Updated and accurate EI-PDRs are crucial to a members application and screening
potential. All members are encouraged to begin the process of reviewing and updating
your EI-PDR now. Detailed instructions are available in the Standard Application Package
located at Ref (C).
8. Extensions and Retirements:
a. Members desiring an extension should follow the guidance provided in their
specific program's ALCGENL as well as notify their Commands to include their extension
request in command concerns.
b. Members asking for retirement from SA in AY21 should submit their request NLT 1 Aug
2020 to ensure backfill requirements can be met.
9. Commands:
a. SA command concerns (for positions appearing on PAL as PO) are due NLT 1 Aug
2020. Please use the guidance located at Ref (D).
