1.  The following information highlights the opportunity that Coast Guard members on
active duty have to participate in the Armed Forces Sports program with the potential
opportunity to represent the United States military in international sports competition.
Last year the U.S. Military competed at the Military World Games in China from 14-28
Oct 2019.
2.  In 2019, we received 109 applications from Coast Guard athletes to compete in Armed
Forces sports.  We had 69 athletes invited to attend Navy or Armed Forces training
camps, culminating in 63 of those members being selected for Navy or Armed Forces
teams.
3.  Armed Forces Sports applications must be received at least 45 days prior to the
selected Armed Forces sporting event.  The MWR website
http://www.navyfitness.org/all-navy-sports/navy-sports-calendar contains the 2020
Armed Forces Sports schedule. Dates and locations are subject to change and the website
will provide the latest updates.
4.  The Navy trials/Armed Forces competitions are open to all officer and enlisted Coast
Guard women and men on active duty.  Selection is based on submission of
application/resume to the Coast Guard Sports Director at the Community Services
Command (CSC).  Applications may be obtained from the MWR website or from CWO3
Mark Durning, at Terry.M.Durning@uscg.mil.
5.  Commands are encouraged to support their active duty members’ participation in the
Armed Forces sports program.  Participation on Navy and all Armed Forces teams brings
credit to not only our service members, but the United States military as a whole.  In
recent years, both male and female Coast Guard athletes have been integral members of
Armed Forces teams competing internationally.  Anyone selected to participate in Armed
Forces sports is expected to compete in all higher levels of competition.
6.  When members are selected to represent the United States in the Armed Forces Sports
program, the travel costs to participate are funded by the Community Services Command
or Navy Sports in accordance with Ref A, and not the command.
7.  Applications must be mailed to:  Community Services Command, Battlefield Tech
Center 1, Suite 500, 510 Independence Parkway, Chesapeake, VA 23320-5180, Attn:
CWO3 Mark Durning, or e-mailed to CWO3 Mark Durning.  CSC will endorse and
forward all applications to Navy sports.  Applications mailed directly to the Navy will not
be considered.  Athletes selected for the Navy trials will compete for selection to
represent the Navy in the Armed Forces championships and may be considered to
represent the United States military in national or international competition.
8.  Individuals or commands desiring additional information should contact CWO3 Mark
Durning at (757) 842-4928.
9.  Coast Guard members with a general injury or illness may also continue their athletic
training and competition in sporting events.  Interested members should visit:
