1. All members are highly encouraged to pursue at least one Special Assignment
during their career. These career broadening assignments provide members
valuable opportunities to represent their Ratings, network, and learn about
other operational and mission support activities, making them ideal candidates
for future assignments to highly visible leadership and management positions
(e.g. Silver Badge, OIC, School Chief).
2. This message solicits candidates and outlines the application process for
members interested in the Apprentice Leadership Program School Chief position in AY20.
3. As the Apprentice Leadership Program School Chief for the Leadership
Development Center’s Leadership and Organizational Performance (LOP) Branch,
the person selected for this position will play a key role in developing the
leadership knowledge and skills of apprentice-level personnel prior to advancement
to E-4. This course is specifically intended to assist member growth from individual
contributor to an apprentice supervisor in the role of a Petty Officer. The ALP
curriculum is integrated into the scheduled course of instruction at all Coast Guard
“A” schools. As a member of the LOP staff you will have the unique opportunity to
travel to a wide variety of Coast Guard units, not just as the ALP School Chief,
but in support of other LOP courses. Typically you will travel an average of 16 weeks
per year. As the ALP School Chief, you will be responsible for the standardization of
curriculum, instructor support and feedback throughout four training centers.
Moreover, you will have a profound impact on the leadership development of over 4,000
future Petty Officers, the largest “C” school in the Coast Guard.
4. Eligibility:
a. Tour complete AY20, AY21 or AY22. Consideration will be given to those who do not
have AY20 PCS orders and/or to Commands who agree to a one year gap.
b. Active duty E8
c. Meets the requirements listed in reference (A), CH 1.E.2 and 1.E.6.
5. Process/timeline:
a. NLT 14 Feb 2020: Standard applications are emailed to EPM-2 at
HQS-SMB-PSC-EPM-2-SpecialAssignments@uscg.mil.
b. The expected report date is 01 JULY 2020.
6. Standard Applications: Members and Commands should pay close attention to the
requirements listed in the standard application found at reference (B). Incomplete
or improperly formatted applications will be returned. Deadline extensions will not
be granted to correct errors.
7. The Special Assignments Officer will coordinate the release from rating process.
Applicants should not contact their detailer asking if they can be released from rate.
