SUBJ:  2019 INNOVATION AWARD SOLICITATION
A. Coast Guard Innovation Program, COMDTINST 5224.13 (series)
1. This ALCOAST solicits nominations for the 2019 Captain Niels P. Thomsen Innovation Awards.
2. The Commandant’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022 calls for the Coast Guard to “be bold, think
anew, integrate new capabilities, challenge the status quo, and innovate how we conduct
operations and provide related support.” Each year the Coast Guard celebrates the creativity
of our members, recognizing the most impactful innovations from across the service through
the Captain Niels P. Thomsen Innovation Awards.
3. The 2019 Innovation Awards will be presented to deserving individuals and/or teams in the
following six categories:
    a. Science and Technology
    b. Operations and Readiness
    c. Administration, Training, and Support
    d. Culture Change
    e. Coast Guard Auxiliary Achievement
    f. The CDR Joel Magnussen Innovation Award for Management
4. The Innovation Program has opened up a new CG_Ideas@Work challenge to collect 2019 Innovation
Award nominations at: https://cg-ideasatwork.ideascalegov.com/. Nominations should describe the
innovative solution and capture how it has positively impacted the service. Final award winners
will be selected by the Coast Guard’s Innovation Council.
5. All Coast Guard active duty, reserve, civilian, and auxiliary personnel are eligible to
submit a nomination. Contractors' contributions may also be acknowledged when part of a
project team.
6. The final day to submit nominations for the 2019 Innovation Awards is 31 January 2020.
