ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Coast Guard Cutter Resolute (WMEC-620) is expected to return home Sunday to St. Petersburg, Florida following a 47-day patrol in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
The Resolute crew conducted training exercises, participated in diplomatic relations in Belize and conducted counter-drug law enforcement operations in the Pacific.
The Resolute crew completed a training exercise with an aviation detachment team from Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON) to ensure mission readiness for the Eastern Pacific patrol.
The cutter crew then transited to Belize City, Belize, to participate in a diplomatic relations event with U.S. Embassy, Department of Defense and Belize coast guard personnel. The engagement included tours of both countries’ Coast Guard assets and training evolutions, including small boat operations, navigation and engineering training, and electronics and communication system inter-operability trials. The international engagement concluded with a tour of Resolute for family members of U.S. Embassy personnel, Belize officials, and DoD personnel stationed in Belize, followed by a joint luncheon held at the Belize coast guard headquarters near Belize City.
The Resolute crew then transited to the Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean conducting law enforcement operations in support of Joint Interagency Task Force – South’s counter-drug mission. The Resolute crew, with the assistance of the HITRON crew, seized more than 1,800 pounds of cocaine, worth an estimated $16 million. The Resolute crew worked with international partners, including Costa Rica, to complete counter-drug boardings on suspect vessels in known drug smuggling areas.
The Resolute is a 210-foot Reliance class cutter and has a crew of 78. It was commissioned on December 8, 1966, and has been homeported in San Francisco, California; Astoria, Oregon; and now St. Petersburg, Florida. The Resolute has a decorated past including patrols in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, participating in the cleanup of the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska, the response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the search and rescue efforts for the El Faro. Recent patrols have focused on the Coast Guard’s Law Enforcement missions of drug and migrant interdiction.
