Coast Guard Academy announces new Athletic Director

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard Academy announces that Dr. Dan Rose has been selected as the next Director of Athletics at the Academy, Thursday. 

Rose, who recently completed his 23rd year with the athletics program at the Academy, replaces Tim Fitzpatrick who stepped down in February after seven years in the position to become president of the New York Youth Baseball Foundation.

Serving as head coach of both the CGA men’s and women’s track teams, Rose was named the 2006 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Coach of the Year. In 2008, he was named Outdoor Track Coach of the Year for the New England Region by the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s teams produced a combined 16 Division III All-Americans and 27 Division III New England Champions.

Rose previously served as department chair of Health and Physical Education at the Academy. Since assuming the Interim Director role his efforts have yielded more than $450,000 in financial support for staff and facility improvements. Rose designed the new playing field layout for Cadet Memorial Field and secured sponsorship for a new football coach position, and a new video scoreboard which offers instant replay and in-game graphic animations.

Rose also collaborated with the Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association to develop the ongoing Cadet Strength & Conditioning Center project, which when completed will more than double current strength training space on campus. He created the Athletic Division’s first NCAA Inclusion and Diversity Designee, a staff member charged with infusing an equity minded perspective in athletics functions.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and a Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from Springfield College, where he threw both the shot put and discus and served as the track and field team captain during his senior season. Rose earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut in 2013.
