NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Long Island Sound Area Maritime Security Committee was recognized as the 2018 AMSC of the Year, Tuesday in Niantic.
After 9/11, the Maritime Transportation Security Act was signed into effect, which required the establishment of AMSCs. The 43 AMSCs throughout the nation enhance communication between federal, state and local agencies and industry partners to foster a culture of security within the maritime environment.
Being named the AMSC of the Year requires committee members to consistently demonstrate a commitment and significant contribution to maritime safety and security in their region.
The Long Island Sound AMSC is chaired by Coast Guard Capt. Kevin Reed, Sector Long Island Sound commander, and is co-chaired by Bill Hackett, Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Emergency Management Director, and Bill Cullen, New York Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Director of Security.
"It takes great collaboration amongst several entities to mitigate the threats to our ports and waterways," said Capt. Reed. "The Area Maritime Security Committee was established to capitalize on skillsets, resources and authorities of multiple agencies to keep our homeland safe through cooperation and communication. This award is indicative of the hard and successful work that our law enforcement, first responders, emergency managers and civilian partners have devoted to this area of responsibility. I am incredibly humbled to work with them."
