Coast Guard medevacs hunter from Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Coast Guard crews medevaced an injured hunter Sunday from the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.

The 45-year-old male injured their ankle while hunting.

Coast Guard Air Station Savannah watchstanders received an emergency call from the hunter and launched an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew. The Dolphin crew hoisted the hunter at 3 p.m. and was taken to Savannah Memorial Hospital for further care.

"We're glad we could get in to assist," said Petty Officer 1st Class Phillip Walker, a rescue swimmer. "We don't conduct many rescue operations in heavily forested areas, but we're trained to work in challenging conditions." 

The hunter was reported to be in stable condition.

Local EMS was also contacted, but unable to get into the remote location.
