CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard assisted two kayakers after they became stranded due to weather on Grass Island near Rockport, Texas, Monday.

At 5:50 p.m., Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi watchstanders received a report from the Rockport Police Department of two kayakers stranded after weather conditions began to deteriorate on Grass Island. Watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew.

The helicopter crew recovered the two kayakers and transferred them to emergency medical services personnel at Aransas County Airport. The kayakers were reported to be in stable condition.

“With weather conditions deteriorating, we are grateful we were able to assist these two individuals," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Colby Gay, Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi duty flight mechanic. "We urge mariners to continually monitor the forecast, file a float plan with a family member or friend and ensure they are equipped with the proper safety gear before leaving shore."

Weather conditions on scene were reported as 29 mph winds, 1-3-foot seas and an air temperature of 45 degrees.
