SUBJ:  100TH ANNIVERSARY OF VETERANS DAY
1. November 11th will mark the 100th Veterans Day on which we have honored
Americans who answered the call to serve and protect this great Nation. On
the first anniversary of the end of World War I, the United States established
the eleventh day of the eleventh month as Armistice Day to commemorate
the heroism of service members killed during World War I. Now known as
Veterans Day, November 11th annually commemorates all who have served
in our Armed Services.
2. At the time the Nation established Veterans Day the Coast Guard also began
the tradition of naming cutters after service personnel lost in action.
Beginning with naming a class of submarine chasers after Coast Guardsmen
killed in action aboard CGC TAMPA during World War I, the Coast Guard continues
to honor and commemorate the memory and sacrifice of its personnel by naming
new cutters as well as shore installations after those that have gone before us.
3. Today the “Legend”-class National Security Cutters and the “Sentinel”-class
Fast Response Cutters carry names that echo through the passageways of our
history and inspire and resonate with those serving today.
4. Veterans Day honors all of us — retirees, active duty members, and reservists.
You are all deserving of our Nation’s heartfelt thanks.
5. As you go about your day on November 11th, take time to recognize the veterans
in your life and communities. As you pause to remember the service of our veterans,
be mindful of those who now stand the watch wherever duty demands.
6. Maintaining the sacred trust of our nation’s future began with the veterans from
prior generations and is now left to us to continue for future generations to come.
