SUBJ:  2019 COAST GUARD PARTNERSHIP IN EDUCATION (CG PIE) AWARDS PROGRAM
1. I am pleased to announce and congratulate the recipients of the 2019 Coast Guard
Partnership in Education Awards. The winners are commended for their outstanding
contributions to their units, communities, and to our Service.
2. The Best Unit Partnership (up to 100 personnel) is awarded to Station Yaquina
Bay, Oregon, for their partnership with Sam Case Elementary School, Taft Elementary
School, Yaquina View Elementary, Newport High School, and Lincoln County School
District. Station Yaquina Bay's volunteers dedicated more than 175 hours toward
mentoring and guiding students of all grades through a variety of programs.
3. The Best Unit Partnership (more than 100 personnel) is given to Air Station
Miami, Florida for support provided to students at Robert B. Ingram Elementary
School. Air Station Miami personnel dedicated more than 277 hours to activities
including on-site tutoring of at-risk students, helping to build their confidence
and potential. Due to the great collaboration between the PIE volunteers and the
school leadership, the school reported an increase of 16% in math and 18% in
reading at the end of the year.
4. The Best Collaborative Partnership (up to 100 personnel) is presented to Station
Oak Island, NC, for their commitment to local schools, and community-based and
professional organizations within the region. Station Oak Island's crew effort
raised awareness of the countless opportunities and experiences in the CG to the
community's youth and to the general public.
5. The Best Collaborative Partnership (more than 100 personnel) is awarded to
Coast Guard Yard, MD for their collaboration with six CG units. With more than
1,200 service hours, volunteers provided support to 18 schools impacting more
than 1,700 students in grades K-12.
6. The Sustained Excellence in CG PIE award is presented to Civil Engineering Unit
(CEU) Providence, RI for their outstanding support to local schools over the past
three and half years. Members of CEU Providence, volunteered over 2,611 hours by
mentoring, coaching a local youth lacrosse team, and sponsoring two students to
attend the Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) Program.
7. The PIE Coordinator of the Year is YN2 Jessica Contreras from Base Seattle, WA,
who significantly expanded PIE awareness among military members. Her efforts
yielded a 300 percent increase in participation at each of the 25 events she
coordinated. Her dedication and efforts resulted in more than 400 hours donated
of her own time serving more than 400 students at Hawthorne Elementary School.
8. The following nominees are also commended for outstanding contributions to the
PIE Program: LTJG Alvarez-Mistry, Operations Systems Center, SN Christopher Arflin,
Station Cape May; LT Stephen Atwell, CGC STEADFAST; BM1 Frank Benetka, Station
Yaquina Bay; LCDR Marc Mares, Pacific Area; LT Austin Moran, Sector Detroit;
Ms. Kathleen Morris, Community Services Command; CWO Joseph Rohrer, Air Station
Cape Cod; MSST New Orleans, MSU Pittsburgh; Sector Honolulu; Sector Los Angeles-Long
Beach; and TACLET South.
