HOUSTON — The Coast Guard assisted a 46-foot vessel taking on water in the San Bernard River near Freeport, Texas, Thursday.

Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a report of a 46-foot cabin cruiser aground after it began taking on water approximately a quarter-mile from the mouth of the San Bernard River with two persons aboard. Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast.

A Coast Guard Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew and a Station Freeport Response Boat-Medium boat crew were launched to the scene.

Once on scene, the Air Station Houston helicopter crew lowered a rescue swimmer and a dewatering pump to the vessel.  The rescue swimmer advised that the pump would not be sufficient to dewater the vessel and hoisted the operator, while the owner requested to stay aboard the vessel.

The owner later reported that he waded safely to shore and is arranging salvage. The vessel remains aground.
