WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Coast Guard and Maritime Charter Academy High School are inviting media to attend a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in support of a partnership program at the Maritime Charter Academy High School in Philadelphia at 10 a.m., Tuesday.

This pilot program was created to address the challenges the Coast Guard faces to diversify the boatswain’s mate rating and enhance recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities within the workforce.

The MOU will enable Maritime Charter School graduates to enlist as E-3s upon entering basic training at Cape May, New Jersey, similar to the Coast Guard Auxiliary, JROTC and Sea Explorers.

“The Coast Guard has worked to identify those schools across the nation that offer specific training and education in areas that correlate to sea-going services, specifically those that would build the basic skills for the boatswain’s mate rating,” said Capt. Tom Walsh, Coast Guard Recruiting Commanding Officer. “Through the work of Recruiting Office Philadelphia, a partnership was forged allowing for this unique opportunity to flourish and become the first high school in the country to adopt an official partnering with the Coast Guard in support of recruiting an inclusive and diverse workforce that reflects the American public.”

Media interested in attending this event should contact Senior Chief Petty Officer Afip Castillo at (367) 249-6333 and arrive at Maritime Charter Academy High School no later than 9:30 a.m., Tuesday.
