Coast Guard reopens Port of Hampton Roads

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Hampton Roads reopened the port and set port conditions to normal at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, allowing vessel movement into and out of the river and the Port of Hampton Roads.

Early preparation and communication between federal, state, local and industry partners helped minimize the potential for damage in the port.

The Coast Guard will continue to broadcast notice to mariners and send out Marine Safety Information Bulletins to notify the maritime community as needed. All maritime users are requested to monitor the progress of the storm and heed all warnings.

Mariners are advised that in advance of the storm, synthetic aids to navigation were temporarily established at certain locations across the Mid-Atlantic region. A synthetic aid is an Automated Identification System aid to navigation message broadcast to an assigned position where a corresponding buoy should be located.
