CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coast Guard Captains of the Port in Georgia and South Carolina reopened all three ports Friday.
“Opening these ports is an important step in recovering from Hurricane Dorian and is vital to resuming domestic and international maritime trade in our region,” said Capt. John Reed, Sector Charleston Commander. “We’d like to thank the Army Corps of Engineers, South Carolina and Georgia Ports Authorities, regional pilots associations, and port partners in Charleston, Savannah, and Brunswick. Their partnership and professionalism allowed us to safely assess the ports and swiftly restore the vital flow of goods and commerce following a major hurricane.”
The Coast Guard contributes to a global supply chain system that supports innovation and prosperity by facilitating the secure and reliable movement of goods within our borders and around the world. The annual economic impact of the Ports of Brunswick, Savannah, and Charleston to the region is $137 billion, according to Ports Authority reports from Georgia and South Carolina.
The Coast Guard continues to conduct assessments, service aids to navigation, and inspect port facilities. Due to potential storm debris from Hurricane Dorian, the Coast Guard encourages mariners to exercise caution when transiting our local waterways. If mariners observe potential safety issues, they are encouraged to notify the Coast Guard Sector Charleston Command Center at 843-740-7050.
