CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Brownsville Police Department and the Port of Brownsville's Harbor Master Office are working together to provide safe harbor in the Port of Brownsville for approximately 30 Mexican fishing vessels seeking refuge ahead of Tropical Storm Fernand, Wednesday.

“This multi-agency effort is to primarily provide a safe harbor for these vessels to wait out the storm,” said Lt. Kurtis Mees, commanding officer, Coast Guard Station South Padre Island. "Through our positive working relationships with our partnering agencies, we are able to quickly mobilize to provide for the safety of these mariners at sea as well as our local communities and the port."

The Coast Guard is anticipating more requests from Mexican fishing vessels to enter the Port of Brownsville for safe harbor.
