CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard rescued a kayaker after his kayak began taking on water approximately one mile east of the Packery Channel jetties near Corpus Christi, Texas, Sunday.

Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi watchstanders were notified by a 911 dispatcher who received a report of a man whose kayak began taking on water, causing him to bail out and cling to a friend’s kayak until help arrived.

An Air Station Corpus Christi MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew arrived on scene, hoisted the kayaker, and transferred him to awaiting emergency medical services personnel at Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi.

“The kayak that began taking on water was an inland kayak that was being used for offshore purposes,” said Lt. Adam Moss, Air Station Corpus Christi aircraft commander.  “Anyone partaking in recreational sports on the water should understand and adhere to the limits of the vessels they are using and always file a float plan before getting underway.”

Both kayakers were wearing lifejackets. The kayaker rescued was last reported in good condition.

Involved in the rescue were:

  • Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi
  • Corpus Christi Beach Rescue

  • Corpus Christi Fire Department
  • Flour Bluff Fire Department
