Coast Guard boat crew medevacs man from cruise ship northwest of Juneau

KODIAK, Alaska - A Coast Guard Station Juneau 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew medevaced a 75-year-old man from a cruise ship south of Coghlan Island, near Juneau, Thursday morning. 

At 2:44 a.m., the boat crew safely transferred the man to Capital City Fire and Rescue emergency medical services personnel in Statter Harbor for further care.

Coast Guard Sector Juneau Command Center watchstanders received a medevac request from the captain of the Norwegian Bliss for a man reportedly exhibiting signs related to an allergic reaction while the boat was moored in Skagway. 

Sector personnel requested the ship divert to Auke Bay to facilitate patient transport and directed the launch of a Coast Guard Station Juneau boat crew to respond. 

"There was great communication and coordination between the Norwegian Bliss, Sector Juneau Command Center, Station Juneau personnel and Capital City Fire and Rescue dispatchers that enabled a smooth and efficient transfer, allowing us to ultimately get the patient to a higher level of care," said Petty Officer 1st Class Blake Fleming, a Sector Juneau operations specialist.
