Coast Guard invites media to sail aboard Barque Eagle during visit to New York

NEW YORK — The Coast Guard invites members of the media to sail aboard Coast Guard Cutter Eagle during its transit from the Statue of Liberty to Pier 86, Friday, marking the training ship’s first visit to New York City in three years. 

Who: Capt. Michael Turdo, commanding officer, Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, and Capt. Jason Tama, U.S. Coast Guard, captain of the port for New York.

What: Media is invited to embark aboard Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, 'America's Tall Ship,' during the ship’s visit to New York City.

When: Friday, Aug. 16 – Sunday, Aug. 18.

Where: Pier 86, W 46th Street, New York, NY 10036

News media will have the opportunity to embark the 295-foot Barque Eagle during its transit from the Statue of Liberty to Pier 86, Friday morning. 

Media interested in attending must RSVP to the Coast Guard Public Affairs New York office at 917-703-0983 or padetny@uscg.mil, by 2 p.m., Aug. 15. We anticipate ten seats being available for news media. Media will be departing from North Cove Marina at 7:30 a.m., Friday.

The Eagle is scheduled to dock at Pier 86 across from the Intrepid Museum Friday, Aug. 16, and will have the following free and public tour schedule:

Friday, Aug. 16: 12 - 4 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 17: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 18: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.

First responders and military members will be able to tour the Eagle from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

A permanent crew of eight officers and 57 enlisted personnel maintain the Eagle and guide Coast Guard Academy cadets through an underway and in-port training schedule, dedicated to learning the skills of navigation, damage control, watch-standing, engineering, and deck seamanship.
