NEW HAVEN, CONN. — The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search for a possible person in the water near Stamford Harbor Saturday evening.

Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound personnel received a report at 12:08 p.m. from a Stamford Marine Police unit of a 10-foot fishing canoe capsized and anchored in the vicinity of the western break wall in Stamford Harbor.

There were personal items and fishing gear left in the canoe when found. The canoe was without identifying markings or owner information.

The Coast Guard directed the launch of a response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Eaton’s Neck, an MH-65 Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Atlantic City and two Coast Guard Auxiliary vessels, in addition to multiple marine police and fire rescue boats from local jurisdictions.

The boat crews arrived on scene at 12:36 p.m. and began search efforts for a possible person in the water. All units searched with negative results until sunset, at which time the search was suspended.

Anyone with information regarding the possible whereabouts of the owner are encouraged to contact the Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center at (203) 468-4421.
