PHILADELPHIA – A $300 million port expansion plan now coming to a close has doubled container and automobile capacity at the Port of Philadelphia posing new challenges and risks for the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard relies on industry and government agency partnerships to address these challenges. Nearly all of the projects and initiatives on our waterways depend upon a coordinated effort with a diverse array of stakeholders and priorities.
In the Port of Philadelphia, record turnaround times on cargo transfers and 166 percent growth has presented unique challenges to Coast Guard personnel stationed there, who are charged with ensuring the safe and secure operation of the port, waterfront facilities, and vessels entering the United States.
Area journalists will be given a front seat to Adm. Karl Schultz’s meeting with port leadership and local stakeholders where they will address Philadelphia’s growing maritime industry and its role in the U.S. Economy at 1:45 p.m., Tuesday, August 13th. This will include a roundtable discussion with port partners, a tour of a commercial vessel, and one-on-one interviews.
Driven by market competition, international stakeholder pressures, and just-in-time inventories, the global maritime supply chain is constantly innovating and evolving. The Marine Transportation System facilitates more than $5.4 trillion of economic activity and 30.8 million jobs each year. These ports, waterways, and critical maritime infrastructure relieve other modes of transportation. According to estimates by the PhilaPort, in Philadelphia, more than 17,000 jobs and over $100 million in annual revenues are expected as the Port continues to expand.
