Coast Guard, Saint Vincent coast guard rescues 3 from disabled 20-foot vessel 52 miles west of Saint Lucia

SAINT LUCIA — The U.S. Coast Guard and the Saint Lucia coast guard rescued three people Monday from a disabled 20-foot center console 52 miles west of Saint Lucia.

Rescued were: Kurby Fontanello, male, 39, Ed Taylor, male, 22, Luis Sadel, male, 37.

While on patrol, Coast Guard Cutter Heriberto Hernandez (WPC-1114) crew sighted an adrift 20-foot center console 52 miles west of Saint Lucia and safely embarked the three people. Once aboard, the survivors reported that they were on the water for four days. The crew of the Heriberto Hernandez safely transferred the survivors to the Saint Lucia coast guard for further medical services.

"The sea can be unforgiving and all boaters should be prepared for emergencies,” said Capt. Greg Magee, acting commander of Coast Guard Sector San Juan. “Communications equipment, such as the VHF-radio, would have helped locate the vessel sooner. However, the U.S. Coast Guard is grateful these individuals were found safe and returned home.”

The Coast Guard encourages boaters to stay safe on the water. Here are some practical tips to think about before you begin your voyage: file a float plan so others are aware of where you're going and when you're supposed to get there in case anything happens; inspect your vessel before each trip; and make sure you have all of the appropriate safety equipment including the right amount of life jackets, flares and electronic position indicating radio beacons. Take extra food and water in case of emergencies.
