Public meetings scheduled for proposed adjustment to the San Juan Harbor Safety Zone

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan and New Fortress Energy will be hosting public meetings Friday for the general public to provide comments regarding the proposed adjustment to the current San Juan Harbor Safety Zone established under Title 33 CFR Part 165.754. The proposed adjustment is intended to address the operation of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers and add a new facility within the San Juan Harbor.

"Public participation is a crucial part of the rulemkaing process which provides citizens the opportunity to submit their comments and concerns for consideration," said Cmdr. Jose Rosario, chief of prevention at Coast Guard Sector San Juan. "The safety and security of our nation's waterway is of vital importance, and we want to ensure the public is aware of any significant proposed changes to the harbor."

On Dec. 12, 2017, the U.S. Coast Guard received a Letter of Intent and Waterway Suitability Assessment from NFE to construct and operate the required infrastructure for offloading and transferring LNG at the Army Terminal Turning Basin in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After reviewing the NFE request and providing recommendations, on September 26, 2018, the U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan determined the Port of San Juan is suitable for the proposed operation.
