Coast Guard Auxiliary crew rescues 6 from capsized boat near Philly airport

 

PHILADELPHIA – Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary rescued six people after their 14-foot boat capsized near Philadelphia International Airport, Thursday evening.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay received a report via VHF-FM radio from a Coast Guard Auxiliary crew who reported that a 14-foot boat reportedly capsized due to the wake from a larger vessel, which resulted in all six people aboard entering the water.

The Auxiliary rescue crew were quickly on-scene and rescued all six people in the water and brought them to Rigley Township Marina.

“The fast action of the Auxiliary crew in this case resulted in rescuing six people in danger,” said Joe Hartline, an Operational Unit Controller at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay. “Cases like this show the versatility and capability of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the role they play in supporting Coast Guard missions.” 

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the all-volunteer, uniformed auxiliary service of the U.S. Coast Guard established in 1939, consisting of over 26,000 volunteers who assist with missions such as safety and security patrols, search and rescue, boating safety classes and safety exams and more.
