1. All members are highly encouraged to pursue at least one Special Assignment
during their career. These career broadening assignments provide members
valuable opportunities to represent their Ratings, network, and learn about
other operational and mission support activities, making them ideal candidates
for future assignments to highly visible leadership and management positions
(e.g. Silver Badge, OIC, School Chief).
2. This message solicits candidates and outlines the application process for
members interested in a special duty assignment as an Officer Candidate School
(OCS) Company Chief in AY20. The OCS Company Chief is critical to the academic,
leadership, and military development of the Officer Candidates, Direct Commission
Officers and Reserve Officer candidates, a training population who comprises more
than 50% of the Coast Guard’s annual commissions. This role will include a
combination of formal and informal instructor duties. The OCS Company Chief is
primarily charged with instructing all drill and ceremonies classes; including
manual of arms, close order drill, customs and courtesies, and honors and ceremonies
(e.g., colors). Additionally, as the only enlisted member on staff, the OCS Company
Chief will instruct all classes pertaining to the enlisted work force; i.e., enlisted
advancements, enlisted employee review, and counseling/mentoring subordinates. The
OCS Company Chief will instruct leadership and team building lessons including
facilitation of both high and low ropes challenge courses. The OCS Company Chief
will stand duty in the barracks, as well as, assist in personnel and room inspections.
In addition to instructing the Officer Candidates, the OCS Company Chief will
demonstrate the importance of having a strong Chief’s Mess/Wardroom connection, and
facilitate a platoon mentor program with the local CPO Mess. 
3. Eligibility:
a. Tour complete in AY20.
b. All active duty E7 members (not above the cut for E8 at time of application).
c. Meets the requirements listed in reference (B), CH 1.E.2 and 1.E.6.
d. Graduate from the CPO Academy or DoD Senior Enlisted Course.
4. Process/timeline:
a. NLT 15 AUG 2019: Standard applications are emailed to EPM-2 at
HQS-SMB-PSC-EPM-2-SpecialAssignments@uscg.mil and 'My Panel Submissions' are
submitted in Direct Access.
b. 19 AUG - 13 SEP 2019: OCS interviews applicants.
c. 08 OCT - 11 OCT 2019: Selection panel convenes.
d. OOA 15 OCT 2019: Panel results released.
e. The expected report date is 01 JUL 2020. 
5. Standard Applications: Members and Commands should pay close attention to the
requirements listed in the standard application found at reference (A). Incomplete
or improperly formatted applications will be returned. Deadline extensions will not
be granted to correct errors.
6. The Special Assignments Officer will coordinate the release from rating process.
Applicants should not contact their detailer asking if they can be released from
rate.
